One of the most infamous cases that shook the conscience of the nation was the abduction and murder of a midwife in Rajasthan in 2011. The alleged involvement of politicians in the disappearance and subsequent murder has helped reveal the darker side of politics. While bribes and nepotism are well known, most people have been unaware of the nexus between politicians and brokers who prey upon unsuspecting people of lower income groups. The Bhanwari Devi case rattled a government and led to a huge backlash from the public. The case highlights the plight of people who are at the mercy of politicians – at the time of her disappearance and subsequent brutal murder, she was aged just 36 and a mother of three little children.
Bhanwari Devi hailed from Ajmer in Rajasthan and like a significant percentage of the rural populace, lived in abject poverty. She joined the government department as a midwife and was slowly drawn into the web of powerful politicians. The roving eye of politicians rested on the young midwife, and she ended up being attracted to a life of luxury and power. Her relations with politicians brought her a lifestyle that she found attractive. However, like all bad things that need to end badly, she ended up losing her life.
As she grew in stature and power in the midst of politicians, including a cabinet minister in the state government, she began asserting herself. She dreamt of making it big and demanded nomination as a representative for state elections. However, she was soon to realize that politicians treat people especially those in poverty as disposable. When she realized that she would not have her way, she resorted to blackmailing the politicians. Little did she realize that politicians are ruthless and merciless, a category of people who would not hesitate to destroy others to stay alive.
She went on to clandestinely record the dalliances of the politicians, as they used her body. When she was confident of having sufficient proof to expose the politicians, she began blackmailing the politicians with the contents of a CD. She also went on to claim that MLA Malkhan Singh had fathered a child. This seriously damaged the reputation of Mahipal Maderna who was allegedly the person in the CD and Malkhan Singh. The cunning and scheming politicians roped in Sunil Gurjar, a power broker to help them out. A well-known person in political circles, he successfully managed to convince her that she could make money out of this, in return for not revealing information.
The naive Bhanwari Devi fell for the smooth talking broker and agreed to exchange the recordings for a huge sum of cash. She was even given an advance through an individual to make the whole deal look like it was working. Unfortunately, she was not aware that there were other plans for her. She walked into a trap – she was abducted in a Bolero, and brutally killed, with her remains being disposed of coldly. A tragic end for a village girl, who joined a regular government job, and ended up being trapped in a vortex of power and sex, at the hands of powerful politicians.
